Genesis 9

What happens: God blesses Noah's family with a renewed creation mandate — but changed: "fear and dread" replaces dominion, meat-eating is permitted with a blood prohibition, and murder is met with capital accountability. God establishes a covenant with all life, placing the bow (a weapon) in the clouds as its sign. Noah plants a vineyard, drinks wine, and lies uncovered. Ham sees his father's nakedness; Shem and Japheth cover him without looking. Noah awakes, curses Canaan (not Ham), and blesses Shem and Japheth. Noah dies at 950.

Key themes: Re-creation with alteration (1:28 vs. 9:1–7 — same words, different world); blood as life-force; the image of God persists through the flood as the basis for human dignity; the unilateral, universal covenant with all life; the bow as a deposed weapon; the tent scene — honor/shame culture; the curse falls on Canaan, not on the offender Ham; Noah's first words are a curse.

Watch for: "Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you" (9:3) — the first meat permission, contrasting with 1:29's plant-only diet; the chiastic structure of 9:6 (a mirror pattern where the second half reverses the order of the first — the act folds back on the actor); "my bow" — possessive, implying it was God's weapon; the ambiguity of "who dwells in the tents of Shem" (9:27 — Japheth or God?); Noah has been silent since 6:9 — his first recorded speech is this curse.

¹And God blessed Noach (Noah) and his sons and said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the land. ²And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every living thing of the land, and upon every bird of the sky, in all which the ground swarms, and in all the fish of the sea; into your hand they are given. ³Every moving thing which is alive shall be food for you; as the green plant, I have given you everything. ⁴Only flesh with its life — its blood — you shall not eat. ⁵And surely your blood of your lives I will seek; from the hand of every living thing I will seek it, and from the hand of the human, from the hand of a man, his brother, I will seek the life of the human. ⁶Whoever sheds the blood of the human, by the human his blood shall be shed, for in the image of God he made the human. ⁷And you, be fruitful and multiply, swarm on the land and multiply on it."

⁸And God said to Noah and to his sons with him, saying, ⁹"And I, see, I am establishing my covenant with you and with your seed after you, ¹⁰and with every living being which is with you — the bird, the livestock, and every living thing of the land with you — from all going out of the tebah, to every living thing of the land. ¹¹And I will establish my covenant with you, and all flesh shall not be cut off again by the waters of the flood, and there shall not be again a flood to destroy the land."

¹²And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant which I am giving between me and between you and between every living being which is with you, for generations of perpetuity: ¹³my bow I have set in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of the covenant between me and between the land. ¹⁴And it shall be when I bring clouds over the land, and the bow appears in the cloud, ¹⁵and I will remember my covenant which is between me and between you and between every living being in all flesh, and the waters shall not again become a flood to destroy all flesh. ¹⁶And the bow shall be in the cloud, and I will see it to remember the covenant of perpetuity between God and between every living being in all flesh which is upon the land." ¹⁷And God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between me and between all flesh which is upon the land."

¹⁸And the sons of Noah who went out from the tebah were Shem and Cham (Ham) and Yafet (Japheth); and Ham is the father of Kenaan (Canaan). ¹⁹These three are the sons of Noah, and from these the whole land was spread abroad.

²⁰And Noah began as a man of the ground and planted a vineyard. ²¹And he drank from the wine and became drunk, and he uncovered himself in the midst of his tent. ²²And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and he told his two brothers outside. ²³And Shem and Japheth took the garment and placed it upon the shoulder of the two of them, and they walked backward, and they covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and the nakedness of their father they did not see.

²⁴And Noah awoke from his wine, and he knew what his youngest son had done to him. ²⁵And he said, "Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants he shall be to his brothers." ²⁶And he said, "Blessed be YHWH, God of Shem, and let Canaan be a servant to them. ²⁷May God enlarge Japheth, and may he dwell in the tents of Shem, and let Canaan be a servant to them."

²⁸And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years. ²⁹And all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years, and he died.
