John 3

Provisional

Chapter Overview
What happens: A Pharisee named Nicodemus — a ruler of the Yehudim — comes to Jesus at night, acknowledging him as a teacher from God because of the signs he has performed. Jesus responds with the declaration that no one can see the kingdom of God unless born "from above" / "again" (a deliberately double-sense word). Nicodemus misunderstands, taking the word in its temporal sense: "How can a man be born when he is old?" Jesus elaborates: one must be born of water and wind/spirit. The wind/spirit blows where it wills — one Greek word means both wind and spirit, a deliberate wordplay. Nicodemus continues to ask "How can these things be?" and Jesus reproaches him: "You are the teacher of Israel and you do not know these things?" Jesus speaks of the Son of Man being lifted up as Moses lifted the serpent in the wilderness (Num 21:9), so that everyone trusting may have life of the age. Verse 16 declares God's love for the world and the gift of the only-born son. Verses 17–21 develop the theme of judgment as self-selection: the light has come, and those practicing evil prefer darkness. In vv.22–36, the scene shifts to the Yehudean countryside. Jesus immerses (the only passage stating this); John the Immerser continues immersing at Ainon near Shalim. A dispute arises about purification. John's followers report that "everyone" is going to Jesus. John responds with the metaphor of the bridegroom and the friend of the bridegroom: "He must increase, I must decrease." The chapter closes with a declaration about the one who comes from above, the Father's love for the Son, and the consequence of not obeying the Son.

Key themes: Birth "from above" / "again" — a built-in ambiguity; water and wind/spirit as conditions of entry into the kingdom; the Son of Man "lifted up" (a Johannine double-meaning — exaltation and crucifixion); God's love for the world; judgment as response to light, not as arbitrary condemnation; the bridegroom metaphor; the transition from John to Jesus; "life of the age" as the gift.

Watch for: the double meaning at v.3 — spatial "from above" or temporal "again"; the wind/spirit wordplay (v.8) — both are the same Greek word; where Jesus's speech ends and the narrator's voice begins (after v.12? v.15? v.21?); the phrase "only-born son" at vv.16 and 18 — "only-born," not "only-begotten"; "life of the age" — not "eternal life"; "judgment" at v.19 — not "condemnation"; the statement that Jesus himself was immersing (v.22, corrected at 4:2); the "not X but Y" construction structuring John's self-diminishment.

Connection: The "lifted up" serpent (v.14) directly references Num 21:9 — Moses's bronze serpent in the wilderness. The wind/spirit at v.8 echoes Gen 1:2 (the wind/spirit over the waters) and John 1:32–33 (the wind/spirit descending on Jesus). The birth language connects to John 1:12–13 (those born "not from bloods, nor from the will of flesh... but from God"). The transition from John to Jesus resumes the theme of John 1:6–8, 15, 19–34 — the Immerser as witness, not the light.

Glossary

1And there was a man from the Perushim (Pharisees) — Nikodemos (Nicodemus) was his name — a ruler of the Yehudim. 2This one came to him at night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you have come from God as a teacher, for no one is able to do these signs that you do unless God is with him." 3Yeshua (Jesus) answered and said to him, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless someone is born from above/again, he is not able to see the kingdom of God." 4Nicodemus says to him, "How is a man able to be born, being old? He is not able to enter into the womb of his mother a second time and be born, is he?" 5Jesus answered, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless someone is born of water and wind/spirit, he is not able to enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which has been born of the flesh is flesh, and that which has been born of the wind/spirit is wind/spirit. 7Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born from above/again.' 8The wind/spirit blows where it wills, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from and where it goes; so is everyone who has been born of the wind/spirit."

9Nicodemus answered and said to him, "How are these things able to be?" 10Jesus answered and said to him, "You are the teacher of Yisrael (Israel) and you do not know these things? 11Amen, amen, I say to you, we speak what we know and we testify to what we have seen, and you do not receive our testimony. 12If I told you earthly things and you do not trust, how will you trust if I tell you heavenly things? 13And no one has gone up into the sky except the one who came down from the sky — the son of man. 14And just as Mosheh (Moses) lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the son of man be lifted up, 15so that everyone trusting in him may have life of the age."

16"For God so loved the world that he gave the only-born son, so that everyone trusting in him should not perish but have life of the age. 17For God did not send the son into the world so that he might judge the world, but so that the world might be saved through him. 18The one trusting in him is not judged; the one not trusting has already been judged, because he has not trusted in the name of the only-born son of God. 19And this is the judgment: that the light has come into the world, and humans loved the darkness rather than the light, for their works were evil. 20For everyone practicing worthless things hates the light and does not come to the light, so that his works may not be exposed. 21But the one doing the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be made evident — that they have been worked in God."

22After these things Jesus and his followers came into the Yehudean land, and there he was spending time with them and immersing. 23And Yochanan (John) also was immersing in Ainon near Shalim, because there was much water there, and people were coming and being immersed — 24for John had not yet been thrown into prison.

25Then a dispute arose from the followers of John with a Yehudi concerning purification. 26And they came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, the one who was with you beyond the Yarden (Jordan), to whom you have testified — see, this one immerses, and all are coming to him." 27John answered and said, "A man is not able to receive anything unless it has been given to him from the sky. 28You yourselves testify for me that I said, 'I am not the anointed one,' but, 'I have been sent before that one.' 29The one having the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices with joy because of the voice of the bridegroom. This joy of mine, then, has been fulfilled. 30That one must increase, but I must decrease."

31"The one coming from above is above all. The one being from the earth is from the earth and speaks from the earth. The one coming from the sky is above all. 32What he has seen and heard — this he testifies, and no one receives his testimony. 33The one who received his testimony has set his seal that God is true. 34For the one whom God sent speaks the words of God, for he does not give the wind/spirit by measure. 35The father loves the son and has given all things into his hand. 36The one trusting in the son has life of the age; but the one disobeying the son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him."
