This is the opening of Acts — the second volume of Luke's work. Acts 1 ties directly back to the Gospel: the same author addresses the same Theophilos (1:1) and recalls "the first account." The chapter spans the forty days after the resurrection, the ascension, and the days before Pentecost. The risen Yeshua promises the holy wind/spirit (vv.4-8) and is taken up in a cloud (v.9); two messengers interpret the event (vv.10-11); the eleven gather in the upper room with the women, Miryam, and Yeshua's brothers (vv.12-14); and Kefa leads the reconstitution of the Twelve, replacing Yehudah with Mattityahu by lot (vv.15-26). Note on speech-marking (Rule 30): the risen Yeshua's direct speech IS marked (vv.4-5, 7-8) — consistent with the Gospel treatment of his words. The two men in white (vv.10-11) are messengers (the angelos-class) and are NOT marked. Proper names follow TT transliteration: Yeshua (Jesus), Kefa (Peter), Yochanan (John), Miryam (Mary), Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), Mattityahu (Matthias).

Supplementary — patterns across the chapter

1

The first account I made about all things, O Theophilos (Theophilus), that Yeshua (Jesus) began both to do and to teach,

CRITICAL — "THE FIRST ACCOUNT" (THE LUKE–ACTS LINK)
- Τὸν μὲν πρῶτον λόγον ἐποιησάμην (Ton men prōton logon epoiēsamēn) = "The first account I made." Logos here = a written treatise/volume. The "first account" is the Gospel of Luke; Acts is its sequel, addressed to the same Θεόφιλος (Theophilos, "friend/beloved of God"; see Lk 1:3). The men ("on the one hand") implies a de ("on the other") never completed — a classic suspended construction. → For the Luke–Acts unity and the dedication convention, see Companion §A1.
"BEGAN TO DO AND TEACH" — *ĒRXATO POIEIN TE KAI DIDASKEIN

ὧν ἤρξατο ὁ Ἰησοῦς ποιεῖν τε καὶ διδάσκειν (
hōn ērxato ho Iēsous poiein te kai didaskein) = "all that Yeshua began both to do and to teach." The word "began" implies the Gospel recorded the beginning* of Jesus's work, which the present volume continues — Acts as the ongoing acts of the risen Yeshua through the wind/spirit.
2

until the day on which he was taken up, having given orders through the holy wind/spirit to the apostles whom he chose.

"WAS TAKEN UP" — *ANELĒMPHTHĒ

ἀνελήμφθη (
anelēmphthē*) = "he was taken up" (aorist passive) — the ascension, the terminus of the Gospel narrative (Lk 24:51) and the hinge into Acts. The same root recurs in vv.11, 22.
"THROUGH THE HOLY WIND/SPIRIT" — *DIA PNEUMATOS HAGIOU

διὰ πνεύματος ἁγίου (
dia pneumatos hagiou) = "through the* holy wind/spirit." Anarthrous in Greek; the TT keeps the slash for πνεῦμα (Rule 2 — wind/spirit/breath) per the locked GS glossary. The risen Jesus's instructions are mediated by the Spirit even before Pentecost.
3

To them also he presented himself living after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them through forty days and speaking the things concerning the kingdom of God.

"BY MANY PROOFS" — *EN POLLOIS TEKMĒRIOIS

ἐν πολλοῖς τεκμηρίοις (
en pollois tekmēriois) = "by many proofs." Tekmērion is a technical word for demonstrative* (compelling) evidence — the strongest evidentiary term available in Greek; used only here in the GS.
"FORTY DAYS" + "THE KINGDOM OF GOD"
- δι' ἡμερῶν τεσσεράκοντα (di' hēmerōn tesserakonta) = "through forty days." The forty echoes Israel's wilderness and Jesus's own testing (Lk 4:2). His post-resurrection teaching concerns τὰ περὶ τῆς βασιλείας τοῦ θεοῦ — "the things concerning the kingdom of God," the same theme that opened and closed his ministry.
4

And being assembled together with them, he ordered them not to depart from Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), but to await the promise of the Father @@"which you heard from me;

CRITICAL — "THE PROMISE OF THE FATHER" + DIVINE SPEECH (Rule 30)
- τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν τοῦ πατρὸς (tēn epangelian tou patros) = "the promise of the Father" — the gift of the wind/spirit (cf. Lk 24:49; Joel 2). At "which you heard from me" the risen Yeshua's direct first-person speech begins; per Rule 30 it is marked (consistent with the Gospel marking of his words). The verb συναλιζόμενος (synalizomenos) may mean "assembling with" or "eating with" — the TT keeps the assembling sense.
5

because Yochanan (John) immersed in water, but you will be immersed in the holy wind/spirit after not many of these days."@@

CRITICAL — "YOU WILL BE IMMERSED IN THE HOLY WIND/SPIRIT"
- ὑμεῖς… βαπτισθήσεσθε ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ (hymeis baptisthēsesthe en pneumati hagiō) = "you will be immersed in the holy wind/spirit." This fulfills John the Immerser's word — "I immerse you in water… he will immerse you in the holy wind/spirit and fire" (Lk 3:16; Mt 3:11; Mk 1:8; Jn 1:33), all already in the TT. Pentecost (ch. 2) is its realization. The contrast water/Spirit, not the abolition of water, is the point. → See Companion §D1 (the immersion promise).
6

So they, having come together, were asking him, saying, "Lord, is it at this time that you are restoring the kingdom to Israel?"

CRITICAL — "RESTORING THE KINGDOM TO ISRAEL"
- εἰ ἐν τῷ χρόνῳ τούτῳ ἀποκαθιστάνεις τὴν βασιλείαν τῷ Ἰσραήλ (ei… apokathistaneis tēn basileian tō Israēl) = "is it at this time that you are restoring the kingdom to Israel?" The verb (apokathistēmi, "restore") is the national-restoration hope of the prophets (cf. apokatastasis, 3:21). The disciples' question is not rebuked as wrong, only as mistimed (v.7). κύριε (kyrie) here = "Lord" addressed to Yeshua. → Companion §B2 (kingdom restoration).
THE QUESTION'S FRAMING
- The construction with ei introduces a real question, not a denial. The TT keeps the disciples' Israel-centered hope intact rather than spiritualizing it.
7

And he said to them, @@"It is not yours to know times or seasons which the Father set by his own authority;

"TIMES OR SEASONS" — *CHRONOUS Ē KAIROUS

χρόνους ἢ καιροὺς (
chronous ē kairous) = "times or seasons" — duration and decisive moments. Set ἐν τῇ ἰδίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ (en tē idia exousia*, "by his own authority") of the Father. Direct divine speech of the risen Yeshua → marked (Rule 30). The answer redirects from calendar to commission (v.8).
8

but you will receive power when the holy wind/spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses both in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) and in all Yehudah (Judea) and Shomron (Samaria) and unto the end of the earth."@@

CRITICAL — THE PROGRAM OF THE BOOK
- ἔσεσθέ μου μάρτυρες (esesthe mou martyres) = "you will be my witnesses." μάρτυς (martys, "witness") later acquires the sense "martyr," but here = legal/testimonial witness. The geography — Yerushalayim → Yehudah → Shomron → ἕως ἐσχάτου τῆς γῆς ("unto the end of the earth") — is the literary outline of Acts itself. The risen Yeshua's speech is marked . → Companion §A2 (the witness-geography structure).
9

And having said these things, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from under their eyes.

THE ASCENSION — "A CLOUD TOOK HIM"
- νεφέλη ὑπέλαβεν αὐτὸν (nephelē hypelaben auton) = "a cloud took him up." The cloud is the vehicle of the divine presence (Ex 40:34; Dan 7:13 "with the clouds"). ἐπήρθη (epērthē, "he was lifted up," aorist passive) — God is the agent. The disciples are eyewitnesses (v.10), grounding the apostolic testimony.
10

And as they were gazing into the sky as he was going, behold, two men stood beside them in white garments,

"TWO MEN IN WHITE" — NOT MARKED AS DIVINE SPEECH
- δύο ἄνδρες… ἐν ἐσθήσεσι λευκαῖς (dyo andres… en esthēsesi leukais) = "two men in white garments" — messengers (the angelos-class; cf. Lk 24:4 at the tomb). Per Rule 30, their words (v.11) are NOT marked as divine speech; only God's/the wind-spirit's direct speech is. White garments signal the heavenly realm.
11

who also said, "Men, Galileans, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Yeshua (Jesus), the one taken up from you into the sky, will so come in the manner in which you saw him going into the sky."

CRITICAL — "WILL SO COME IN THE MANNER"
- οὕτως ἐλεύσεται ὃν τρόπον (houtōs eleusetai hon tropon) = "will so come in the manner in which" — the promise of a return like the departure (visibly, with cloud). The threefold "into the sky/heaven" (εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν) frames the scene. Ouranos = sky/heaven; the TT keeps "sky" for the visual sense here.
12

Then they returned to Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) from the mount called of Olives (Har haZeitim), which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath's journey away.

"A SABBATH'S JOURNEY" — *SABBATOU… HODON

σαββάτου ἔχον ὁδόν (
sabbatou echon hodon*) = "having a sabbath's journey" (~2,000 cubits, the permitted sabbath distance). Har haZeitim (the Mount of Olives) is the place of the ascension and, in Zech 14:4, of YHWH's eschatological coming — resonant with v.11.
13

And when they entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying — both Kefa (Peter) and Yochanan (John) and Ya'aqov (James) and Andreas (Andrew), Philippos (Philip) and Thomas, Bartholomaios (Bartholomew) and Mattityahu (Matthew), Ya'aqov son of Halfai (James son of Alphaeus) and Shimon the Zealot and Yehudah son of Ya'aqov (Judas son of James).

THE ELEVEN — THE TWELVE MINUS ONE
- The list names eleven (the Twelve without Yehudah Iscariot), setting up the replacement (vv.15-26). Kefa (Peter) heads the list, as in the Gospels. Shimon the Zealot (ho zēlōtēs) and Yehudah son of Ya'aqov distinguish them from Shimon Kefa and Yehudah Iscariot. → For the apostle roster across the Gospels and Acts, see the People file.
14

These all were persevering with one accord in prayer, together with the women and Miryam (Mary) the mother of Yeshua (Jesus) and with his brothers.

CRITICAL — "WITH MARY… AND HIS BROTHERS"
- σὺν… Μαριὰμ τῇ μητρὶ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ καὶ τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς αὐτοῦ (syn Mariam tē mētri tou Iēsou kai tois adelphois autou) = "with Miryam the mother of Yeshua and with his brothers." Mary's last appearance in the narrative; οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ ("his brothers") — among them Ya'aqov, who will lead the Yerushalayim assembly (Acts 15; the Letter of James). The exact sense of adelphoi (siblings / wider kin) is debated; the TT keeps "brothers." → Companion §C1.
"WITH ONE ACCORD" — *HOMOTHYMADON

ὁμοθυμαδόν (
homothymadon*) = "with one accord, of one mind" — a keynote of early Acts (1:14; 2:46; 4:24; 5:12), describing the community's unity in prayer and worship.
15

And in those days Kefa (Peter), rising up in the midst of the brothers, said — the crowd of names was together about a hundred and twenty —

"ABOUT A HUNDRED AND TWENTY" — *HŌSEI HEKATON EIKOSI

ὡσεὶ ἑκατὸν εἴκοσι (
hōsei hekaton eikosi) = "about a hundred and twenty." ὄχλος ὀνομάτων (ochlos onomatōn*, "a crowd of names") = a count of persons. The number (12 × 10) may signal a quorum sufficient to constitute a community in Jewish reckoning. Kefa's leadership emerges here.
16

"Men, brothers, it was necessary for the scripture to be fulfilled which the holy wind/spirit foretold through the mouth of David concerning Yehudah (Judas), who became a guide to those who arrested Yeshua (Jesus);

CRITICAL — "IT WAS NECESSARY FOR THE SCRIPTURE TO BE FULFILLED"
- ἔδει πληρωθῆναι τὴν γραφὴν (edei plērōthēnai tēn graphēn) = "it was necessary for the scripture to be fulfilled." Edei ("it was necessary") expresses divine necessity — a Lukan keynote. The wind/spirit is said to have spoken διὰ στόματος Δαυὶδ ("through the mouth of David"), i.e., in the Psalms, treated as prophetic of Judas (cited in v.20). The TT keeps the slash for πνεῦμα.
17

because he was numbered among us and obtained the share of this service."

"OBTAINED THE SHARE" — *ELACHEN TON KLĒRON

ἔλαχεν τὸν κλῆρον τῆς διακονίας ταύτης (
elachen ton klēron tēs diakonias tautēs) = "obtained the share/lot of this service." κλῆρος (klēros, "lot/portion") foreshadows the casting of lots in v.26 and the word for the office Judas forfeited. διακονία (diakonia*) = "service, ministry."
18

(This one, then, acquired a field from the wages of unrighteousness, and falling headlong, he burst in the middle, and all his entrails poured out.

CRITICAL — JUDAS'S DEATH: NOT HARMONIZED WITH MATTHEW
- πρηνὴς γενόμενος ἐλάκησεν μέσος (prēnēs genomenos elakēsen mesos) = "falling headlong, he burst in the middle." This account (Judas buys the field; falls and bursts) differs from Matthew 27:3-10 (Judas throws the silver back, hangs himself; the priests buy the field). Per the Prime Directive (Rule 3), the TT renders Acts on its own terms and does not harmonize the two; the divergence is a known crux. [textual-historical — the two accounts differ: a genuine tension, not resolved here.]
19

And it became known to all those dwelling in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), so that that field was called in their own language Hakeldama — that is, Field of Blood.)

"HAKELDAMA" — THE TEXT GLOSSES ITSELF
- Ἁκελδαμάχ (Hakeldamach) = Aramaic ḥaqel demā, "Field of Blood." Luke transliterates the Aramaic and then supplies the meaning ("that is, Field of Blood") — a built-in gloss; the TT keeps both, transliterating the term (Rule 4) and preserving the author's own translation. "Their own language" (τῇ ἰδίᾳ διαλέκτῳ) = the Aramaic of Jerusalem.
20

"For it is written in the book of Psalms: 'Let his homestead become desolate, and let there be no one dwelling in it,' and: 'Let another take his overseership.'

CRITICAL — THE PSALM CITATIONS (Ps 69:25; Ps 109:8)
- Two citations: Ps 69:25 ("Let his homestead become desolate…") and Ps 109:8 (τὴν ἐπισκοπὴν αὐτοῦ λαβέτω ἕτερος = "Let another take his ἐπισκοπή"). Episkopē = "oversight, office, overseership" — the apostolic office is read as a vacant office to be filled, grounding the election that follows. The TT renders "overseership" to keep the office sense rather than the later ecclesiastical "bishopric."
21

It is necessary, therefore, that of the men who accompanied us during all the time in which the Lord Yeshua (Jesus) went in and out among us,

"WENT IN AND OUT AMONG US" — *EISĒLTHEN KAI EXĒLTHEN

εἰσῆλθεν καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἐφ' ἡμᾶς (
eisēlthen kai exēlthen eph' hēmas) = "went in and out among us" — a Hebraic idiom (cf. Deut 31:2; 1 Sam 18:13) for the whole course of daily life and leadership. ὁ κύριος Ἰησοῦς ("the Lord Yeshua") — kyrios* as the title of the risen Jesus.
22

beginning from the immersion of Yochanan (John) until the day on which he was taken up from us — that one of these become a witness of his resurrection together with us."

CRITICAL — THE CRITERIA OF APOSTLESHIP
- The qualifying span runs ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τοῦ βαπτίσματος Ἰωάννου ("beginning from the immersion of Yochanan") to the ascension, and the function is μάρτυρα τῆς ἀναστάσεως αὐτοῦ ("a witness of his resurrection"). Apostleship = firsthand companionship through Jesus's ministry and witness to the resurrection — which is why the Twelve cannot simply be left at eleven. → Companion §A2.
23

And they put forward two, Yosef (Joseph) called Barsabbas, who was surnamed Justus, and Mattityahu (Matthias).

THE TWO CANDIDATES
- Ἰωσὴφ τὸν καλούμενον Βαρσαββᾶν (Iōsēph… Barsabban) = "Yosef called Barsabbas" (Aramaic bar-Shabba, "son of the sabbath"), with the Latin cognomen Justus; and Μαθθίας (Maththias) = Mattityahu — the same Hebrew root as Matthew (Mattityahu, "gift of YHWH"), but a different man. The TT glosses "(Matthias)" to distinguish the two.
24

And praying, they said, "You, Lord, knower of the hearts of all, show which one — these two — you chose

"KNOWER OF HEARTS" — *KARDIOGNŌSTA

καρδιογνῶστα (
kardiognōsta, vocative) = "knower of hearts" — a rare title (only here and Acts 15:8), addressed to κύριε ("Lord"). The referent of kyrios* in the prayer is debated (God the Father, or the risen Yeshua who "chose" the Twelve, cf. 1:2); the TT keeps "Lord" and notes the ambiguity. [referent: Possible — God or the risen Yeshua.]
25

to take the place of this service and apostleship, from which Yehudah (Judas) turned aside to go to his own place."

"TO HIS OWN PLACE" — *EIS TON TOPON TON IDION

πορευθῆναι εἰς τὸν τόπον τὸν ἴδιον (
poreuthēnai eis ton topon ton idion*) = "to go to his own place" — a restrained, perhaps euphemistic, statement of Judas's end/destiny. τόπος ("place") balances the κλῆρος ("share/lot") he forfeited (v.17).
26

And they gave lots for them, and the lot fell on Mattityahu (Matthias), and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

CRITICAL — THE CASTING OF LOTS
- ἔδωκαν κλήρους αὐτοῖς… ἔπεσεν ὁ κλῆρος ἐπὶ Μαθθίαν (edōkan klērous… epesen ho klēros epi Maththian) = "they gave lots… the lot fell on Mattityahu." Casting lots is the HB mode of discerning God's choice (Prov 16:33; the priestly lots; the division of the land). It is the last such instance in Acts — after Pentecost, the wind/spirit guides directly. Matthias is "numbered with the eleven," restoring the Twelve. → Companion §B3 (lots and divine choice).
