The Transparent Translation · John

John 1

Provisional

Chapter Overview
What happens: The chapter opens with a cosmological prologue linking the "word" (logos) to the beginning of creation, to God, and to all that came into being. The word becomes flesh and dwells among humans. John the Immerser is introduced as a witness to the light, not the light himself. He testifies before priests and Levites sent from Jerusalem, denying that he is the anointed one, Elijah, or the Prophet. The next day, John identifies Jesus as "the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world" and testifies to seeing the wind/spirit descend on him like a dove. Two of John's followers begin following Jesus — Andrew and an unnamed disciple. Andrew brings his brother Simon, whom Jesus renames Peter ("rock"). Jesus finds Philip, who finds Nathanael. Nathanael's skepticism gives way to recognition, and Jesus promises greater things — the sky opened and messengers of God ascending and descending upon the son of man.

Key themes: The "word" (logos) as pre-existent agent of creation; light versus darkness; testimony as the Immerser's primary function; "flesh" — the Greek word covers physical, mortal, embodied existence; in John it is consistently physical/mortal (some later traditions read it as "sinful nature"); grace/favor and truth through Jesus the anointed one versus the law through Moses; "No one has seen God at any time" — a theological boundary claim; the lamb of God; the wind/spirit descending; the gathering of the first followers; the Jacob's-ladder echo (Gen 28:12) at v.51.

Watch for: The verb "was" in v.1 signals ongoing existence, contrasted with "came into being" in v.3 (a different tense); the ambiguous phrase boundary in vv.3–4 (what belongs with what); "in him was life" or "what came into being — in him was life" — both readings noted; the shift from cosmic prologue (vv.1–18) to narrative testimony (vv.19–51); the triple denial of John (not the anointed one, not Elijah, not the Prophet); the Mosaic prophet of Deut 18:15 behind "the Prophet"; the renaming of Simon to Peter (echoes Abram → Abraham); "Can anything good come from Nazareth?" — Nathanael's skepticism; the son of man title (first occurrence in this Gospel).

Connection: The opening "In the beginning" (ἐν ἀρχῇ) directly echoes Gen 1:1 (בְּרֵאשִׁית). The creation through speech in Gen 1 ("And God said") finds its theological counterpart in the logos through whom all things came into being. Light and darkness (Gen 1:3–5) reappear as cosmic categories. The wind/spirit hovering over waters (Gen 1:2) connects to the wind/spirit descending on Jesus at immersion. The messengers ascending and descending (v.51) directly cite the Jacob ladder vision (Gen 28:12).

Glossary

1In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God. 2This one was in the beginning with God. 3All things came into being through him, and apart from him not one thing came into being. What has come into being 4in him was life, and the life was the light of humans. 5And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

6There came into being a man, having been sent from God — his name was Yochanan (John). 7This one came for testimony, so that he might testify concerning the light, so that all might trust through him. 8He was not the light, but came so that he might testify concerning the light. 9The true light, which enlightens every human, was coming into the world. 10He was in the world, and the world came into being through him, and the world did not know him. 11He came to his own things, and his own people did not receive him. 12But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become children of God — to those trusting in his name, 13who were born not from bloods, nor from the will of flesh, nor from the will of a man, but from God.

14And the word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we saw his glory — glory as of an only one from a father — full of grace/favor and truth. 15John testifies concerning him and has cried out, saying, "This was the one of whom I said, 'The one coming after me has come to be before me, because he was first in regard to me.'" 16For from his fullness we all received, and grace/favor upon grace/favor. 17For the law was given through Mosheh (Moses); grace/favor and truth came into being through Yeshua (Jesus), the anointed one. 18No one has seen God at any time; the only-born God, the one being in the bosom of the Father — that one has made him known.

19And this is the testimony of John, when the Yehudim sent priests and Levites from Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) to ask him, "Who are you?" 20And he confessed and did not deny, and he confessed, "I am not the anointed one." 21And they asked him, "What then? Are you Eliyahu (Elijah)?" And he says, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" And he answered, "No." 22Then they said to him, "Who are you? — so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" 23He said, "I am a voice crying out in the wilderness: 'Make straight the way of the Lord'" — as Yeshayahu (Isaiah) the prophet said.

24And those who had been sent were from the Perushim (Pharisees). 25And they asked him and said to him, "Why then do you immerse, if you are not the anointed one, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" 26John answered them, saying, "I immerse in water; in your midst stands one whom you do not know — 27the one coming after me, of whom I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandal." 28These things happened in Beyt-Anyah (Bethany) beyond the Yarden (Jordan), where John was immersing.

29On the next day he sees Jesus coming toward him and says, "See, the lamb of God, the one taking away the sin of the world. 30This is the one concerning whom I said, 'After me comes a man who has come to be before me, because he was first in regard to me.' 31And I did not know him, but so that he might be made known to Yisrael (Israel) — for this reason I came immersing in water." 32And John testified, saying, "I have seen the wind/spirit descending as a dove out of the sky, and it remained upon him. 33And I did not know him, but the one who sent me to immerse in water, that one said to me, 'Upon whom you see the wind/spirit descending and remaining upon him — this is the one immersing in the holy wind/spirit.' 34And I have seen, and I have testified that this one is the son of God."

35On the next day again John stood, and two of his followers, 36and having looked at Jesus walking, he says, "See, the lamb of God." 37And the two followers heard him speaking and followed Jesus. 38And Jesus, having turned and having seen them following, says to them, "What do you seek?" And they said to him, "Rabbi" — which, being translated, means Teacher — "where are you staying?" 39He says to them, "Come and see." They came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day; it was about the tenth hour.

40Andreas (Andrew), the brother of Shimon (Simon) Kefa (Peter), was one of the two who heard from John and followed him. 41This one finds first his own brother Simon and says to him, "We have found the Messiah" — which is, being translated, the anointed one. 42He brought him to Jesus. Having looked at him, Jesus said, "You are Simon, the son of John; you will be called Peter" — which is translated "Rock."

43On the next day he wanted to go out to the Galil (Galilee), and he finds Philippos (Philip). And Jesus says to him, "Follow me." 44And Philip was from Beyt-Tsaidah (Bethsaida), from the city of Andrew and Peter. 45Philip finds Nathanael and says to him, "The one of whom Moses wrote in the law, and the prophets — we have found him: Jesus, son of Yosef, from Natseret (Nazareth)." 46And Nathanael said to him, "From Nazareth can anything good be?" Philip says to him, "Come and see."

47Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and says concerning him, "See, truly a Yisraeli (Israelite) in whom there is no deceit." 48Nathanael says to him, "From where do you know me?" Jesus answered and said to him, "Before Philip called you, while you were under the fig tree, I saw you." 49Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the son of God; you are the king of Israel." 50Jesus answered and said to him, "Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, you trust? You will see greater things than these." 51And he says to him, "Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see the sky opened and the messengers of God ascending and descending upon the son of man."
