Curiosities and Open Questions

G1. Seven words in the first verse

G3. The "very good" escalation

God evaluates creation as "good" (tov) six times (vv. 4, 10, 12, 18, 21, 25). Only at v.31, after the creation of humanity, does the evaluation escalate to "very good" (tov me'od). The article also appears on "the sixth day" (yom hashishi) — uniquely among all six days. Both features mark Day 6 as the culmination.

G5b. Subdue and dominion vs. work and keep — the stewardship tension

Genesis 1:28: "fill the land and subdue (kabash) it, and have dominion (radah) over..." Genesis 2:15: "to work (avod) it and to keep (shamar) it." These are textually distinct vocabularies:
kabash (subdue) = agricultural cultivation, bringing under productive use

avod (work/serve) = active labor, cultivation
shamar (keep/guard) = protective maintenance, preservation
The first pair (Gen 1) emphasizes authority and productivity. The second pair (Gen 2) emphasizes care and preservation. Both are in the text. The ecological question — is humanity's role exploitation or stewardship? — is not resolved by the text; it is held in tension between these two word-pairs. The TT preserves both vocabularies with notes on each, letting the reader see both dimensions rather than choosing one.
Post-flood repetition (Gen 9:1–3): The "be fruitful and multiply and fill the land" command re-appears verbatim at Gen 9:1 to Noach (Noah) and his sons — the creation-mandate renewed after the flood. But the dominion language shifts: Gen 9:2 says animals will "fear and dread" humans (not the functional governance of Gen 1:26, 28). And Gen 9:3 grants explicit permission to eat meat — extending the diet beyond Gen 1:29's vegetarian assignment. Same structural command, altered ecological relationship. The Gen 9 passage does not cancel the Gen 1 command; it modifies the relationship while renewing the mandate. POSSIBLE reading: the creation-baseline remains normative; the Gen 9 adjustments reflect the post-flood condition of a damaged world.

G6. Divine name macro progression: Elohim → YHWH Elohim → YHWH

Across Genesis 1–4, the divine name follows a progression visible in the TT because YHWH is rendered consonantally:
Gen 1:1–2:3: Only Elohim (God) — 35 occurrences. The cosmic creator, universal, unnamed by the personal name.
Gen 2:4–3:24: YHWH Elohim — the compound name. Intimate garden-presence, walking, speaking face-to-face.
Gen 4 onward: YHWH alone — personal interaction with individual humans (Cain, Abel, Noah).
The divine name narrows from universal to personal as the narrative moves from cosmos to individual. Most translations obscure this by rendering all three as "God" or "the LORD God" — the TT makes the progression visible.

G2. What is NOT created in Genesis 1?

The text never narrates the creation of: water, darkness, "the deep" (tehom), or the wind/spirit of God. All are present in v.2 before the first creative act. The text begins mid-scene, with some elements already in place.

G4. Darkness is never called good

God calls the light "good" (v.4). Darkness is named (v.5) but never evaluated. Whether this is theologically significant or simply a feature of the literary structure is debated. The text does not resolve it.

G7. Divine naming as reality-ordering

In Genesis 1:5, 8, 10, God names the light "Day," the darkness "Night," the raqia "Skies," the dry ground "Land," and the gathered waters "Seas." The text presents naming as an act that follows separation — God divides, then names.
In the philosophy of language, there is a debate about whether names simply describe things that already exist, or whether naming itself creates a new category. The Genesis 1 pattern fits the second view: the name does not describe something already defined. It establishes a category. "This is now Day; this is now Night."
This contrasts with Gen 2:19-20 where the human names animals (see Chapter 2, G0). The difference is significant: God names cosmic domains (Day, Night, Skies, Land, Seas), while humans name creatures. This reflects a hierarchy of authority that the text builds without explaining.

G8. "In beginning" — time, space, and matter in ten words

Genesis 1:1 in Hebrew contains seven words (ten in English): "In beginning God created the skies and the land." Readers have observed that this single verse introduces three fundamental categories at once: "In beginning" establishes time (a temporal starting point); "the skies" establishes space (a spatial domain); "the land" establishes matter (a physical substance). In modern physics, time, space, and matter-energy form an interdependent continuum. None can exist without the others. If there is matter but no space, there is nowhere to place it; if there is matter and space but no time, there is no "when" for it to exist. The text does not make this argument. It simply states that all three appeared together in one creative act. Whether the simultaneity is deliberately communicating the interdependence of time, space, and matter, or whether this is a structural observation readers project onto the text, is the reader's assessment. The text's economy (compressing the origin of time, space, and matter into a single sentence) is textually verifiable regardless of the reader's interpretive framework.

G5. "Let us make" — who is "us"?

Genesis 1:26: "Let us make a human in our image." The plural is genuinely anomalous in a text that otherwise uses singular verbs for God. Options (all POSSIBLE):

3. Literary plural (authorial convention)

The TT preserves the plural literally and lists options without privileging any.
Historical and Archaeological Context

C1. Ancient Near Eastern cosmological model

• Waters above the raqia (held back by the sky-dome)

• Earth surface (seas gathered, land visible)
• Waters below (underground waters, springs, "the deep")
This model is attested in Mesopotamian, Egyptian, and Ugaritic sources. It is the cosmological framework shared across the ancient Near East — not unique to Israel, not unique to Genesis.
The TT preserves this picture by transliterating raqia (rather than interpreting it as "expanse" or "firmament") and by rendering "waters above/below" literally.

C3. Tell Fekheriye bilingual statue — tselem/demut attested outside the Bible

A near-life-size basalt royal statue (about 2 m) from Tell Fekheriye in north-eastern Syria — the "Hadad-yith'i statue," ca. 9th century BCE — carries a bilingual Akkadian–Aramaic inscription (KAI 309). Its Aramaic text labels the statue with both words ṣlm ("image") and dmwt ("likeness") — the same word-pair Genesis 1:26 uses for the human made "in our image (tselem), according to our likeness (demut)." On the statue the pair is applied to a physical object that represents a king and stands in for him before the god Hadad.
This is the closest extrabiblical attestation of the exact Genesis word-pair, and it lends weight (PROBABLE) to reading the human as a royal/representational "image" of God — a representative who stands for the sovereign — rather than "image" in a merely physical-resemblance sense. Crucially, this is a parallel attestation of shared vocabulary, not evidence of literary dependence in either direction: it shows how ṣlm and dmwt were used in the wider Aramaic-speaking world, nothing more. C2. Temple and creation connections

E1b. Ancient timekeeping — what the luminaries actually mark

Genesis 1:14-18 assigns the luminaries four functions: "signs," "appointed times" (mo'adim), "days," and "years." Ancient Near Eastern timekeeping was observational:
Lunar months: the moon's cycle (~29.5 days) defined months. New-moon sighting marked the month's start.
Solar year: the sun's position determined agricultural seasons (planting, harvest) and the 365-day year.
Stars as signs: constellations marked seasonal transitions (e.g., Pleiades rising = planting season in ancient Mesopotamia).
The text assigns to the luminaries exactly what ancient cultures used them for — time-marking, not decoration. The luminaries are functional instruments, not objects of worship (hence deliberately unnamed at v.16). The text's assignment matches ancient observational practice while stripping the theological overlay of astral worship that pervaded ANE cultures.

E1. The text presents functional cosmology, not empirical cosmology

Genesis 1 describes what things do: lights mark time, land produces vegetation, animals fill domains, humans exercise dominion. Modern science describes what things are: physical composition, natural forces, evolutionary processes.
These are different kinds of accounts answering different kinds of questions. Trying to harmonize them (concordism: "day-age theory," "gap theory") or to pit them against each other (anti-concordism: "Genesis is scientifically wrong") both miscategorize what the text is doing.
The TT position: Present the Hebrew text honestly. Let readers assess the relationship to modern science for themselves. Neither concordism nor anti-concordism is adopted.

E2. Vegetation before luminaries

Genesis 1 presents vegetation (Day 3, vv. 11–12) before the creation of luminaries (Day 4, vv. 14–18). In modern botanical understanding, photosynthesis requires sunlight.
This is an observation, not a verdict. Options include: (1) the text describes functional assignment, not chronological sequence; (2) the text reflects a pre-scientific cosmology where vegetation is linked to land, not to sunlight; (3) light already existed from Day 1 (v.3), only its sources are named on Day 4.
All readings are POSSIBLE. The TT does not resolve this; it presents the text's sequence honestly.

E3. The age question

Modern cosmology dates the universe at approximately 13.8 billion years; Earth at approximately 4.5 billion years. Genesis 1 presents a seven-day creation framework.
The TT takes no position on whether "days" are literal 24-hour periods, extended epochs, literary frameworks, or something else. The Hebrew word yom (day) can denote a 24-hour day, a daytime period, or an indefinite time ("in the day of..." = "when..."). The text uses the "evening and morning" formula for Days 1–6, which suggests structured units — but whether those units are chronological, liturgical, or literary is not settled by the Hebrew alone.

E4. "To its kind" (lemino) — taxonomy and the concept of biological "kinds"

The word min (kind/type) appears 10 times in Genesis 1 (vv. 11, 12 x2, 21 x2, 24 x2, 25 x2, and implicitly in v.29). Vegetation, sea creatures, birds, and land animals all reproduce "to its kind." The term sets boundaries on reproduction without defining what those boundaries are. Modern biology (Linnaeus, 1735) classifies organisms into species, genus, family, order, a hierarchy the text does not use. The Hebrew min is broader and less precise than "species": it may correspond to species, genus, or even family level depending on context. The text asserts reproductive continuity within kinds. It does not address variation within kinds, common descent, or speciation. What min includes and excludes is the reader's question. The text draws the boundary without defining its resolution.
The World at the Time

The dating of Genesis's composition is debated. This section presents "the world at the time" for each major scenario, so readers holding any position can see the historical context that would apply. The TT does not take sides on when Genesis was composed — it presents all major scholarly positions and lets the reader evaluate.

D6. The verb-form shift between Genesis 1:1 and 1:3 — an indefinite gap?

Wayyiqtol (vayyomer, 1:3 onward) is the chain of "and... and... and..." that drives the Day 1 through Day 6 sequence. Each action follows from the previous one in narrative order.
The shift means 1:1 is grammatically independent from the six-day sequence that begins at 1:3. Verse 1:2 ("and the land was chaos and void") uses yet another construction: a circumstantial clause describing the state of things.
What this implies for the "age" question: The text does not specify how much time, if any, separates the completed event of 1:1 from the sequential narrative beginning at 1:3. The grammar allows three readings: (a) no gap, where 1:1 is a summary heading for what follows; (b) an indefinite gap, where 1:1 describes a prior creative act and the six days begin afterward; (c) a simultaneous restatement, where 1:1 and 1:3 describe the same moment from different angles.
The Hebrew professor C. John Collins (lead Hebrew translator of the ESV, also a trained scientist) has described this as: the opening statement occurs "at an indefinite period before" the six-day sequence. This is a grammatical observation, not a theological conclusion. It means the text itself does not specify the age of the universe, regardless of how one reads the "days."

D1c. Oral performance — why the patterns exist

"Expanse" (modern evangelical preference) strips the root meaning. Raqia preserves the Hebrew form and lets the reader encounter the term on its own terms.

D2. tohu vavohu (תֹהוּ וָבֹהוּ) — chaos and void

The midrashic method reads: "God created the world for the sake of Torah / Israel / the Messiah." This is not a claim about what the word "means" linguistically but about what it hints at through the rabbinic technique of cross-referencing every occurrence of a keyword across the entire Hebrew Bible.
